Palm1. Q. My palm tree has orange berries on it. Are these edible?
A. All fruiting structures of palm trees are edible--not tasty but edible. Date palms which used to be plentiful around the Alamo Plaza before the freeze of 1929 produce the best of the palm products. Date palms are not extremely cold hardy and must be hand pollinated to produce acceptable fruit. Palms are dioecious (having girl and boy plants) and only the girl plant has the fruiting structures which you have decided to eat. I have heard the saying "If it feels good, do it." I guess a horticultural saying could be "If it looks good, make jelly and eat it!"
