Question:
I have an old Post Oak dropping leaves continuously. I broke off small twig from up high, and found small white legless larva in stem base. What if, any control options exist? Tried to let nature take course for two years with symptoms, but now I’m too concerned to sit back.

Answer:
There are three or four possible borers (twig pruner, oak branch borer, oak-stem borer). The control for each is the same: destroy twigs by pruning or when they fall and improve tree vigor.

My recommendations for Post Oaks across the state: minimize turf around tree, water only when necessary, eliminate any irrigation system, use an organic or other low salt, slow release fertilizer with a micro element supplement, and prune deadwood every four years. Insecticides are generally ineffective because timing is absolutely critical, but could be used for very high value specimens. Consult with a certified arborist for timing and current products. Contact the Texas Forest Service office in the Houston area - (713) 688-8931 - for further information.
