Q: I hear a lot about having "good drainage" in planting beds. What constitutes good drainage? Is it elevating the bed a little above the surrounding grade, or adding soil amendments?A: "Good Drainage" means that the plants do not stand in water for several days after a rain or after water is applied. "Tricks" of planting in poor drainage areas include planting on a raised bed or berm. Adding soil amendments to such a raised bed facilitates drainage.
