Most
viburnums are very large deciduous shrubs that have
dark green leaves and dense foliage with white blooms
and blue berries in early spring. The birds eat the
berries before they ripen.

Cooler weather means
a longer harvest period for many vegetables. Lettuce
and leafy greens are sweeter and more tender. Lettuce,
collards, spinach, broccoli, Brussels sprouts and Swiss
chard will continue to grow to be a part of your Thanksgiving
and, maybe even, your Christmas feast.

Planning
for Fall Gardening. By Dr. Jerry Parsons.
A fall garden often produces better quality and higher
yielding vegetables than a spring-summer garden. But a
fall garden requires careful planning. Planting must be
timed to allow frost-sensitive vegetables to mature and
to be harvested before frost. Those that will tolerate
frost can be planted so that harvesting can continue after
the first fall frost.

The most versatile
groundcover has to be Asiatic jasmine. It grows equally
well in sun or shade, is a good xeriscape plant, is
evergreen, and can be manicured or grown in more natural
manner. The major limitation of Asiatic jasmine is that
it is slow to be established.

Groundcovers. By Dr.
Calvin Finch. A lawn is a groundcover, but there
are other choices as well. The "other" groundcovers
have some advantages over a lawn. They are usually less
work than a lawn. No weekly mowing, less fertilizer, and
less pesticides. Most groundcovers also require less water
than a lawn. Once established many groundcovers do not
require irrigation and others prosper with watering once
per month. A major advantage of some groundcovers is that
they have more shade tolerance than any lawn grass. Some
groundcovers even have attractive flowers.
