Poinciana, Caesalpinia pulcherrima, (Also commonly known as Pride of Barbados) has an electric-orange flower that seems to try and outshine the sun. The poinciana has an airy, tropical look. It will grow as a small tree in milder climates, but in South Texas it usually blooms at about 5 feet tall after dying back to the roots every winter. A similar species, C. gilliesii, is as drought resistant and sun loving as C. pulcherrima but the flower is a drab yellow rather than the electric-orange. Butterflies and hummingbirds like poinciana, unfortunately, so do the deer.
